EMC testing to defence and aerospace standards such as MIL-STD-461, DEF STAN 59-411 and RTCA DO-160.
BAE Systems operates its Faraday Test Centre, a UKAS-accredited EMC facility (laboratory 0047), from its Rochester, Kent site as part of the group's Product Development and Qualification function. The MOD-approved centre runs three large anechoic chambers with interconnecting shielded rooms, testing emissions and susceptibility from 10kHz to 40GHz (pulse-modulated susceptibility up to 2000V/m) to MIL-STD-461, RTCA DO-160, DEF STAN 59-411 and the Eurofighter Typhoon-specific SPE-J-000-E-1000 spec, supporting platforms including Typhoon, F-16, F-22, F-35 and rotary-wing/commercial avionics.
The Southampton laboratory of Eurofins Electrical & Electronic UK, part of UL Solutions (formerly Hursley EMC Services), is UKAS-accredited (1574) for EMC and radio testing at Trafalgar Close, Chandler's Ford, Eastleigh. Military and aerospace EMC testing covers DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461, AECTP 500 and RTCA DO-160, including bulk current injection. Civil testing covers emissions and immunity to CISPR and EN 61000 standards, railway (EN 50121), medical (EN 60601-1-2) and marine (IEC 60945) EMC, radio spurious emissions to ETSI standards, and FCC and ISED scopes. Facilities include semi-anechoic and fully anechoic chambers and dedicated military test chambers.
QinetiQ holds UKAS accreditation (laboratory 1936) for RF and E3 (electromagnetic environmental effects) test and evaluation work from its Cody Technology Park site in Farnborough. As one of the UK's largest defence technology companies, its EMC-related test capability sits within a much broader research and evaluation portfolio for military and government customers.
Secure Systems & Technologies was the first company accredited under the CESG Formal TEMPEST Certification Scheme (CFTCS), and operates a purpose-built facility combining TEMPEST design, manufacturing and test-and-certification work under one roof, from a 22,000 sq ft site in Gloucester near NCSC Cheltenham. Now part of Spectrum Control's SSIA business unit (alongside Canadian sister brand Emcon), the company designs, tests and certifies TEMPEST, EMC-rated, rugged and secure communications equipment to the SDIP-27 standard via NCSC's CFTCS scheme, for defence, government and NATO customers, with supplier relationships spanning Airbus, Cisco, Dell, HP, L3Harris and others.
Malvern Optical holds UKAS accreditation (schedule 8955) for testing across military vehicles, radar equipment and weapons systems, and separately holds Platform Level TEMPEST accreditation (CPTAS). Based on the former RAF Pershore airfield in Worcestershire, the company runs an EMC screened room and other electro-magnetic and electro-optic test facilities for defence customers across land, sea and air.
Electromagnetic Testing Services holds UKAS accreditation (schedule 4416) with a flexible scope covering commercial and automotive EMC testing, operating from Stebbing, Essex since incorporation in 1992. The lab's work spans commercial, industrial, medical, railway and military product testing alongside EMC consultancy.
AQL EMC traces its UKAS accreditation (number 0018) back to 1982, making it the longest continuously accredited EMC test laboratory in the UK; the company itself was formed in 1988 out of an EMC department with roots in MOD ship and submarine testing dating to the 1960s. Based in Wimborne, it tests to RTCA DO-160 (revisions C-F), MIL-STD-461 (revisions C-F), DEF STAN 59-411 and specialist HIRF/attenuation, RS105, HERO, NEMP and RADHAZ testing, either in its own laboratory or on customers' premises. AQL EMC became part of the Eurofins Scientific group in June 2023 and of UL Solutions in October 2026.
WEMEC works as an EMC engineering consultancy from its Shefford base, guiding automotive, defence and marine sector products through certification rather than operating a fixed test chamber itself. Services include project management, product validation and on-site assessments, and the company has traded since incorporation in 2013.
